The condom, made of natural rubber latex, is designed to cover the penis completely with a closely fitted cylindrical membrane that includes a reservoir. However, colors, flavors, foil, and packing materials are tailored to meet customer requirements. All the various condom types undergo testing using the same test equipment and methods in accordance with applicable International Standards. To monitor product characteristics, various tests are conducted on the finished product.

The device is well established and there are several published International and National Standards such as EN 4074:2002, ISO 4074:2002 and WHO 2003 Specifications and Schedule of The Indian Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The sampling plans used in most of these standards are based on ISO 2859 and ensure consistent quality in products made from natural rubber latex.
